This will be my first trip to Slippery Falls Scout Ranch ... is it easy to
locate?
Slippery
Falls Scout Ranch is located north
of Tishomingo and south of Reagan in beautiful southeastern Oklahoma.
You may view or download a Map to
Slippery Falls Scout Ranch and a Map of the SFSR
campgrounds from this site.
When is the pre-camp leaders
orientation meeting for Slippery
Falls Summer Camp
2010?
We will conduct two
leader’s orientation meetings. The first leader orientation meeting
will be held on Sunday April 27, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at the Laura Fields
Scout Service
Center in Lawton. The second will be held on Sunday
May 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gaylord Scout Service
Center in Oklahoma City.
It is very important that every
unit have at least one representative at one of these two meetings. This
meeting will set the stage for your troop to have a successful camping
experience at Slippery
Falls this summer.
This will also be your opportunity to meet the Slippery Falls Scout Ranch
summer camp leadership for 2008.
What day does camp start on
& when should we arrive?
We begin our camping session on
Sunday and conclude on Saturday morning. You should plan to arrive at Slippery Falls between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00
p.m. on the Sunday of your camp week. The specific camp weeks
for 2010 are the weeks beginning June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 5,
July 11, and July 18.
What should I bring to camp (and
what should I not bring to camp)?
We have prepared two lists of suggested items to bring to camp noting the items
appropriate for units and for leaders, Scouts and Venturers. You can
use this same link to view a list of items which leaders, Scouts and
Venturers should not bring with them to camp. Leaders need to also
review the Guide to Safe Scouting and cover all prohibited items with their
Scouts or Venturers.
What is the daily schedule?
Check out the Leader's Guide or
view the daily schedule page online.
What medical forms do we use?
All Scouts and Leaders attending camp must have a physical examination
before coming to camp, and bring the proper medical form to camp. The
examination must be performed by a licensed physician, and all scouts and
leaders are required to have a physical each year. Each Scout and Leader
will have a health recheck after his arrival, and the troop’s medical
forms will be kept on file with the camp health officer and will be
returned at the end of the week. A leader from each troop will be
responsible for keeping and administering any medications for the scouts in
the troop during the week. Adult leaders who will be in camp for less than
72 hours are not required to have a complete physical; however, a personal
health history (Parts A and C) is required. Please make arrangements for
phycial examinations to be completed before arrival at summer camp. Any
Scout or Leader who does not have a completed health form- including
examination - will be restricted from all camp activities until proper
examination forms are signed.
What are the 2010 camper fees
for Slippery Falls Scout Ranch?
Summer Camp fees for Scouts and
Venturers at SFSR in 2010 are:
Last Frontier Council Scouts or Venturers:
$185
Out of Council Scouts or Venturers: $195
In addition to the above amounts, there is
an additional $10.00 fee for each Maverick Troop Scout.
Are any camperships available?
Yes, camperships are available.
Last Frontier Council Scouts may secure a campership form through either of
the Last Frontier Council service
centers. The information is also included in the leader's guide
book. The unit leader needs to make a request in writing, by filling
out a campership request for Slippery
Falls. All guidelines
for campership applications can be found on the reverse side of the applicationand
in the leaders guide. All campership request forms must be turned in to the
council office by March 15, 2008.
Camperships generally pay for one
half of the camp fee. The youth’s family, unit and chartered
organization should pool their resources first, with a campership request
to meet the balance. Each unit receiving a campership will receive a credit
voucher that is redeemable at the office or at camp. It is necessary to
have the voucher in hand during the SFSR check in to receive the credit.
Do we have to take the swim test
before camp?
No, our waterfront staff will
offer the swim test to all Scouts on Sunday of check-in. Some troops may
elect to take the swim test before camp to expedite their check-in process.
Can swim checks be completed before
camp?
We highly recomend Troops and
Venture Crews that incorporate aquatics into their regular program to
complete swim checks prior to camp. The swim checks must be performed by a
certified Lifeguard. Also, keep in mind that swimming in a lake
is much different than swimming in a swimming pool. We recommend that
Scouts new to camp or unaccustomed to swimming in a lake, complete their
swim checks at camp where they will be able to become acclimated to the
water.
Does the Lifeguard administering
the swim test have to be a BSA lifeguard?
No, any certified lifeguard can
administer the swim test.
Can a Scout from another troop
attend camp with our troop?
Yes, if it’s fine with that
troop and his parents, it's fine with us!
Can we add additional Scouts to
our unit count after the money has been turned in?
You can add additional youth upon
approval of the camp director. Some weeks are more full than others and
this is necessary in order to balance the attendance.
What is the cost for a leader to
attend Slippery
Falls?
The fee for a leader is $110 in
2010. Your troop will receive a $5 credit for every Scout that attends.
Thus, if you bring 22 Scouts, 1 leader position is free and so on.
This covers the cost of their food at camp. Leaders may rotate when
necessary: however, for the best interest of the Scouts, consistent
leadership throughout your unit’s stay in camp is
recommended. Units that rotate leaders during the week can fill
a leader space with more than one person staying different parts of the
week. For example, one leader might stay the first half of the week and
another the second half. If the two leaders do not stay in camp at the same
time, they use only one leader-space and pay only $110. Leaders
participating in the Outpost Diamond H Adventure pay only $110. The
adults volunteering to act as Scoutmasters for Maverick Troops attend for
free. However, these leaders will be responsible for the Maverick Troop
Campers, just like a regular Scoutmaster. Their responsibilities will
include such duties as discipline, coordinating schedules and getting the
troop to meals.
How many leaders does our unit
need to have at Slippery
Falls?
All units are required to have at
least two adult leaders in camp at all times. This policy is required by
the Boy Scouts of America. All leaders must meet the qualifications for the
leadership position in which they serve. The unit leader must be at least
21 years of age. Any additional leaders must be at least 18 years of
age. With larger units, exceeding the minimum is highly recommended.
Is there an active Commissioners
Corps at Slippery
Falls Scout Ranch?
Slippery Falls
has a dedicated volunteer staff of commissioners who come to camp to make
sure that each unit has everything they need for a fantastic camp
experience. These commissioners will be stopping by your campsite every
morning to deliver coffee, and to visit with troop and crew leaders. The
commissioners will help make sure you have all the supplies you need. If
there is something broken or missing in your camp site, please let them
know and they will see that it is taken care of.
When can I reserve a campsite
for 2010?
Now. Units attending in 2009 were
able to reserve a spot by placing a deposit during their week at camp. All
campsites will be available August 1, 2009, may be reserved on a
first-come, first-served basis, by a $100.00 deposit. The campsite
reservation is nonrefundable but may be used toward the total camp fee.
Troops that make a reservation, but for some reason do not attend, forfeit
their $100 deposit. Units coming to camp each summer have first pick to
reserve their campsite for the following year. You can view the campsite reservation chart, showing campsites
which have already been reserved online. Because the chart is
updated periodically, there are likely to be campsite reservations on
record at the council service center that are not yet shown online.
Are there tents in all the SFSR
campsites, or do we bring tents to camp?
Many, but not all, of the
campsites at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch have tents provided in them. The
list below shows ONLY those campsites that do have tents available in the
site, and how many tents per campsite are provided. We do not move
additional tents into the campsites. Each platform has one tent that
holds two people only, so if your chosen campsite does not have enough
tents, please arrange to bring more to fulfill your total need. At the time
present time, cots are not available with the tents and platforms, so
please bring your own.
Any modifications that need to be
made to tents and tent platforms to conform to special needs should be
turned in to the program office so that proper accommodations can be
made.

When can we register for the
Maverick Troop Program?
You may register for Maverick
Troop any time more than two weeks from the start of your arrival at camp
for either Maverick Troop week. The registration forms are available
at the council office and are available online in the leader's guide
packet. Please remember, we only offer the Maverick Troop program option
during the last two weeks of camp.
How do we get to camp? and where
do we park if we drive to camp?
Each unit is responsible for the
safe transportation of its members to and from camp, and to make sure that
all vehicles meet National BSA Insurance requirements. Transporting Scouts or
adults in the bed of a pickup truck or trailer - whether it is covered or
uncovered - is against BSA Policy. In addition, units visiting Slippery Falls from other councils are
responsible for obtaining the appropriate tour permits from their home
council.
Parking is provided at the camp entrance and on the east and west sides of
camp for leaders and visitors. You may ONLY leave your trailer and one vehicle in your
campsite to store gear. Any special handicap needs should to be addressed
with the program offce and will be taken care of. To keep traffc in camp to
a minimum, only camp vehicles will be allowed in camp during the week. Unit
vehicles will be permitted into camp during check-in and check-out, for the
purpose of loading and unloading. Please park off the road to allow passage
of camp logistics and emergency vehicles. While driving in camp, please
observe the speed limit of 7 miles per hour.
What if I have an accident or
get sick while I am at camp?
In case of illness or emergency, Slippery Falls operates a health lodge that
is open 24 hours a day and is manned by trained medical personnel able to
handle a wide variety of accidents and illness. In addition, Slippery Falls
Scout Ranch has a working relationship with physicians and hospitals in Madill,
Tishomingo, Durant and Ardmore, as well as a
10 minute response time with local EMS to
handle more serious emergencies. If this kind of treatment is required, the
Scout’s parents will be notified by phone.
If a medical trip away from Slippery Falls is required, we ask that one
of the Scout’s leaders drives him to the hospital to enable the
Health Officer to remain in camp so that they can treat any other potential
problems.
Are there any dangerous critters
at camp?
Slippery Falls
is in a wilderness setting. While visiting the outdoors, whether for summer
camp or at any time, it is common to encounter various forms of wildlife.
Dangerous wildlife at Slippery Falls Scout Ranch could include: venomous
snakes, scorpions, spiders, ticks, and centipedes. Bites from these
animals are extremely rare but precautions should be taken. A few tips to
keep you comfortable at camp follow:
|
|
• Wear closed-toe shoes
• Use insect repellents with DEET
• Carry flashlights at night
|
• Shake out clothing and
shoes
• Keep food out of tents
• Check for tick bites daily
|
Are there deadlines I should be
aware of?
Before March 15: Campsite
deposit due - $100
Units that were in a campsite in 2009 were able to reserve a spot by
placing a deposit during their week at camp. Campsites available after
August 1, 2009, may be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, by a
$100.00 deposit. The campsite reservation is nonrefundable but may be used
toward the total camp fee. Troops that make a reservation, but for some
reason do not attend, forfeit their $100 deposit. Units coming to camp each
summer will have first pick to reserve their campsite for the following
year. Use the Registration link (above or below) to view additional
deadline information.
When can I get my final merit
badge schedules?
Final schedules for your troop
will be made available to you during check-in on Sunday, allowing the
office staff time to balance session numbers for the entire week. Should
the office staff need to drop anyone from a session due to program or staff
limitations, the unit will be contacted prior to arrival at camp.
How old do Scouts have to be to
take Rifle Shooting?
Campers for shooting sports
should be, at minimum, second year campers for rifle shooting and third
year campers for muzzle loading rifles and shotguns. Scouts must have the
strength and size to manage a ten pound target rifle, while utilizing five
different shooting positions. As a means to determine adequate size, the
Scout should have a distance of at least thirteen inches between the tip of
his thumb and the top of his upper arm.
How do you address Fire Safety
Issues?
The Slippery Falls Fire alarm
system will be explained at the first leader’s meeting, and a test of
the system will be conducted early in the week during your camp session.
Some fire fighting equipment is available at several locations throughout
camp.
Under no circumstances will flames of any kind be allowed in tents.
Scouts and leaders who are using
personal tents must have them labeled “No Flames in Tents.”
This can be stenciled on the tent, or on a place card in front of the tent.
Flashlight or battery-powered
lanterns - which do not pose the threat of fire or asphyxiation - are the
only acceptable light for use in tents.
Where do we eat?
We eat our meals in the Dining
Hall, in two shifts, A and B. Before each meal, the camp assembles at
their campsite markers on the parade ground. The staff officer of the day
facilitates the flag ceremony, grace, any program notes, and dismisses
scouts to go eat. After the meal, we ask that every-one remains in the
Dining Hall for program notes until they are dismissed by the staff.
The table waiter system is used in the Dining Hall for setting up and
cleaning up after meals. The Dining Hall Steward will explain this during
your camp tour.
Some people have special dietary
needs. The staff will work the best we can to accommodate these
needs. You MUST notify us at least two weeks in advance of any
special dietary needs that are required. Dietary supplements should be
brought from home for specific dietary requirements.
